Understand Sync Contacts Status Messages

Sync Contacts runs in two parts: Google Contacts sync and email history sync. The status messages tell you which part is running and what finished.

Common messages#

  • "Syncing contacts…": the sync has started.
  • "Google up to date • Email: starting…": the Google step has nothing new, and the email step is about to start.
  • "Google: X new, Y updated • Email: starting…": Google Contacts updated, and email sync is about to start.
  • "Email: syncing…": the email step is running.
  • "Contacts are up to date: no changes.": nothing changed in Google or email.
  • "Synced contacts • Google: X new, Y updated • Email: X new, Y updated": the sync finished and changes were applied.

Sync error messages#

  • "Sync error: Google sync failed: … • Email: starting…": Google Contacts sync failed, but email sync still started.
  • "Sync error: Email job failed: …": email sync failed. Try again in a few minutes.
  • "Sync error: Email timed out": email sync took too long. Try again later.
  • "Email sync failed to start: …": email sync could not be queued. Try again later.
  • "Sync failed: …": a general sync error. Retry once.

If Sync Contacts is disabled#

If the Sync Contacts button is disabled, hover it. If the tooltip says "Email indexing is still in progress. Please check back soon.", wait and try again later.
