Start a voice session

Open Chat, start voice from the microphone button, and begin speaking. Voice lets you work on drafts, check Gmail, look up contacts, and more.

First time? Allow your microphone#

The first time you use voice, your browser asks for microphone permission. Click Allow. If you accidentally blocked it, see Fix microphone access.

Connect and start talking#

  1. Click Chat in the sidebar.
  2. Click the microphone button in the message bar.
  3. Wait for the status to show Listening.
  4. Start speaking.

Try these first#

Not sure what to say? Here are a few prompts that work well:

  • "List my drafts"
  • "Read the first draft"
  • "Edit that draft"
  • "Add a note about Scott"
  • "Send this draft"

Mute or stop#

While connected, you can:

  • Mute your microphone (toggle button) if you need to talk to someone nearby.
  • Stop the session entirely (red button).

Before you can send by voice#

Voice can read, edit, and create drafts even with basic Gmail access. But to send an email by voice, you need Gmail send permission.

If voice says it cannot send:

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations.
  2. Connect Gmail again.
  3. When Google asks, grant Gmail send access.
