Start a voice session

Voice runs inside Chat. Click the microphone button in the composer, wait for the status to read Listening, and speak. Mute, Stop, and the session countdown sit in the same bar.

Start voice#

  1. Click Chat in the sidebar.
  2. Click the microphone button in the message composer.
  3. Allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  4. Wait for the status to read Listening, then speak normally.

There's no separate voice page. Everything happens in the Chat thread you already have open.

If the microphone can't start, dreamif.ai opens a dialog titled "Allow microphone access for this site" with steps for your browser. See Fix microphone access.

What the status line means#

Status What's happening
Requesting microphone Your browser is deciding whether to give dreamif.ai the mic.
Connecting The session is opening.
Listening dreamif.ai can hear you. Talk.
Working It's running something, like a Gmail search or a draft edit.
Speaking It's talking back.
Muted Your microphone is off.
Ending voice The session is closing.

Mute or stop#

The mute toggle turns your microphone off without ending the session, which is what you want when someone walks up to your desk. The red Stop button ends the session outright.

Stopping doesn't discard anything. Drafts you created or edited stay in Gmail, and the transcript stays in the chat thread.

Watch the session clock#

A single voice session runs about 55 minutes, and 60 minutes is the hard stop. Once 10 minutes or less remain, a countdown appears in the voice bar as M:SS left, then Time's up when the session ends.

Start a new session to keep going, as long as you have voice time left on your plan. See Understand voice usage and resets for how the monthly quota works, and Voice limit reached if voice won't start at all.

Read the transcript as you go#

Everything you say and everything dreamif.ai says back appears in the Chat thread as bubbles while the session runs. Scroll up mid-call to check a name, an address, or a number it read out earlier.

Things worth trying first#

  • "List my drafts"
  • "Read me the first draft"
  • "Make that shorter and add a line about the open house"
  • "Add a note about Scott"
  • "What does my Thursday afternoon look like?"

Actions that change something get staged before they happen. Say "confirm" to let one through. See How voice confirmations work.

Prefer to call instead of typing#

Phone voice reaches the same assistant with the same tools, from a normal phone call, and its minutes come out of the same quota as browser voice. Set it up once on Settings > Voice access, then see Call dreamif.ai by phone.
