Understand Tool Summaries In Chat
When Chat runs tools, it shows a short timeline so you can tell what it is doing and what finished.
What you will see#
The card looks like:
- "Working for a moment" while the tools are running
- "Worked for 12s" after the tools finish
Click the card to expand it.
What the list means#
When expanded, you will see a short list of tool steps with a status like:
- started
- completed
- failed
Some internal steps are hidden on purpose. The list is meant to show the user facing steps, not every internal detail.
When this matters#
Tool summaries are most useful when Chat is doing multi step work, like:
- finding the right email thread
- loading a draft
- searching Drive
- checking calendar availability
